Loose Fill for Deep, Affordable Attics
Blown-in insulation is cellulose or fiberglass in loose form, blown through a hose. On an open attic floor it is the cheapest way to reach the depth that keeps summer heat out: Georgia's code summary lists R-38 for new ceilings, and DOE suggests R-49 to R-60 for an uninsulated Zone 3 attic. Loose fill also settles around wires, ducts and framing without the gaps batts leave.
Cellulose vs fiberglass
Cellulose is mostly recycled paper treated for fire resistance; it is heavier and slows air movement better. Fiberglass loose fill is lighter and does not absorb water. Fixr lists blown fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80 per square foot. Both work well over a sealed ceiling.
Working around ductwork
Most Augusta-area attics have ducts lying on or above the attic floor. We blow insulation around and over ducts where appropriate, keep the air handler and service paths accessible, and point out disconnected or crushed ducts before burying them.
Dense-pack walls
Older homes near downtown Augusta, in mill villages and in older parts of Aiken may have empty walls. Dense-packed cellulose fills those bays through small holes without removing interior walls. We check wiring first.
Where foam is better
Loose fill does not seal band joists or crawl space walls and should never be used in a damp crawl space. Those areas get foam. Many quotes combine both.

Blown-In Insulation Questions
Is blown-in good enough for an Augusta attic?
Over a sealed ceiling, yes. It is the most economical way to reach R-38 to R-49.
Does blown-in settle?
A little, so it is installed slightly deep. Dense-pack in walls is packed so it does not settle.
Can it go over my old insulation?
Yes, if the old material is clean and dry.
