When Insulation Needs to Come Out
Insulation removal and replacement is needed when what is in the attic or crawl space has failed. In the Augusta area that usually means crawl space batts that soaked up humidity and fell, attic insulation contaminated by rodents or raccoons, or insulation damaged by a roof leak. Damaged insulation does not insulate well, and it hides the gaps that need sealing.
Attic removal
Loose fill comes out through a large vacuum hose into bags or a collection unit outside, so it never travels through the house. Batts are bagged by hand. Then we seal the ceiling and install new insulation to the depth you choose.
Crawl space cleanout
Fallen, wet batts are pulled out and bagged, along with debris. That is usually the first step of encapsulation or floor insulation.
Pest contamination
Insulation fouled by rodents or other animals should be removed and the entry points sealed before new insulation goes in. Have a wildlife or pest professional confirm the animals are gone first.
Spray foam removal
Foam sprayed over a leak or that never cured right sometimes has to be cut and scraped out. HomeGuide lists foam removal at $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot; Fixr's range runs to about $5 when done by hand.

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions
Does old insulation always need to come out?
No. Clean, dry insulation can stay. Wet, moldy or contaminated insulation should go.
What about vermiculite?
Light, pebbly gray-brown or gold fill should be tested before anyone disturbs it. Asbestos-containing material is removed by a licensed abatement contractor.
How long does removal take?
Many attics or crawl spaces are cleared in a day.
