How Foam Works in a Cooling Climate

Spray foam insulation is a two-part polyurethane mixed at the gun that expands and bonds to wood, block and metal. Unlike batts or loose fill, it stops air moving through the space it fills. In the Augusta area, where summer air is hot and humid, that air sealing matters as much as R-value: every leak lets in heat and moisture that the air conditioner has to remove.

Open-cell on roof decks

Open-cell foam is light and expands a lot, R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch in HomeGuide's numbers. Sprayed on the underside of the roof deck and on gable walls, it turns a hot vented attic into a semi-conditioned space. That keeps ductwork and the air handler in cooler air. Open-cell lets some moisture pass, which allows the roof deck to dry, and it costs less per square foot than closed-cell.

Closed-cell where water is a risk

Closed-cell foam is dense, R-5 to R-7 per inch, and resists water. It is the right choice for crawl space walls, band joists over crawl spaces, and the inside of metal buildings, where condensation is the main problem. It also adds stiffness to the surface it bonds to.

When foam is not the best buy

On an open attic floor with ducts in good shape, sealing the ceiling and blowing cellulose or fiberglass deep is usually cheaper than foaming the roof deck. Georgia's code summary lists R-38 ceilings, and DOE suggests R-49 to R-60 for an uninsulated Zone 3 attic; loose fill gets there inexpensively. We price both options when either could work.

Termites and inspection access

In the Southeast, foam against foundation walls can hide termite tubes. In crawl spaces we keep foam off the top of the foundation where your pest company needs to inspect, or leave an inspection gap, and we point out anything they should see. Ask your pest company about their requirements before work starts.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Open-cell or closed-cell for my roof deck?

Open-cell is the usual choice in our climate. It seals the deck, costs less and lets the deck dry. Closed-cell is used where more R-value per inch is needed.

Will spray foam lower my summer bills?

Sealing leaks and keeping ducts out of extreme attic heat usually reduces cooling load. How much depends on the house; we explain what to expect for yours.

Does foam on the roof deck void my shingle warranty?

Some shingle makers have rules about unvented roof assemblies. Check your roofing warranty; we can give you the details of the assembly to share with them.

Can foam go on a crawl space floor?

Floors usually get a vapor barrier, not foam. Foam goes on the crawl walls and band joists.
